Since surface thought only sometimes points to the truth, how can we ever come to trust ourselves when we have contradictory thoughts like this? We go deeper and find those hidden thoughts, but the surface thoughts will always find a way to make sure we confuse the hell out of ourselves and keep going back and forth and back and forth. So how do we change this, how do we fix it and how do we make sure that it's not just our ego surface thoughts that are trying to trick us?
Listen to your body. Feel your body and your feelings, your emotions point towards truth. If you are afraid of flying in an airplane, for example, you may not be actively repeating to yourself on the surface "we're going to crash, we're going to crash" "something is going to go wrong" but if your heart starts to race and you start feeling nervous or scared, you're definitely telling yourself those kinds of phrases somewhere deeper inside of yourself, somewhere that is more difficult to detect.
I have found, in order to change this though, using those surface thoughts can help. In the above example, instead of leaving your head as a "blank slate" or continuing on with surface thoughts like the above, change it up. Use a mantra and repeat it actively in your mind. "I will be okay" "Everything will be fine." Since even these thoughts can be contradicted I also find thoughts that point towards "Whatever will be, will be" and other surrendering thoughts can also help too. It's also good to point out that we also have power ourselves too, as to not get into a pattern of helplessness.
All of these different thoughts happen to us simultaneously and in the blink of an eye. If we are not completely immersed in the present moment, we will not be able do detect these thoughts. It takes some practice. The hidden thoughts are so far imbedded into us that they become our patterns, and in order to change that pattern, we have to create a new healthier pattern for ourselves. We all know that breaking out of a pattern is not easy to do, it takes some work, patience, and persistence but eventually you will break through thought...and break into truth.
Do you think that you are in thought?Or do you think that you are out of thought?
Or do you think that you are out of thought because you are in thought?
